Obscure：使昏暗，遮掩
当地时间2004年11月17日上午，数以百万计的红色蝗虫出现在埃及首都开罗上空，引起开罗市民和政府的高度关注。据悉，这是开罗市中心地区首次遭遇如此大规模的蝗虫入侵。
外电报道如下：
Swarms of locusts obscure the Giza pyramids near Cairo November 17, 2004. Swarms of pink locusts swept through Cairo on Wednesday that recalled the plague of biblical Egypt, flying high above tall towers and scaring pedestrians who stamped on them or ran for cover.
Obscure表示“使昏暗，遮掩”，在这里形容“遮天蔽地”的蝗雨将开罗搞得“天昏地暗”。例如：His success obscured his failures.（他的成功使他的失败显得微不足道。）；The moon was obscured by dark clouds.（月亮被乌云遮住了。）Unlike the origins of most nations, America's origins are not obscured in the mists of time（不象大多数国家的起源，美国的起源不会在时间的长河中被隐藏。）此外，obscure还有“使难理解，搞混”等引申义。
